Bighead caught in St. Croix underscores urgency around Asian carp
DULUTH, MN ---- April 24, 2012 ---- The discovery late last week of another Asian carp at the mouth of the St. Croix River underscores the need to move ahead with efforts to stop their spread, according to officials with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
On Thursday, April 19, commercial fishermen working near Prescott, Wis., netted a 30-pound bighead carp from the St. Croix River where it flows into the Mississippi. One of several nonnative species of Asian carp that can cause serious ecological problems, bighead carp have been working their way north in the Mississippi River. Thursday's catch was the second time this year Asian carp have been found by commercial fishermen in Minnesota waters. In March, a bighead and a silver carp were netted on the Mississippi River near Winona. Last April, another bighead was taken from the St. Croix near Prescott. While no established populations of bighead or silver carp are known to exist in Minnesota, environmental DNA (eDNA) testing last year suggests the fish may be more common in Twin Cities segments of the Mississippi and St. Croix rivers than either agency or commercial netting have been able to confirm. read more.....> Coast Guard urges mariners to take advantage of free vessel safety!
THUNDER BAY, ON --- April 12, 2012 -- Checking safety gear before leaving the dock saves a boater the potential cost of a civil penalty and more importantly, ensures the necessary lifesaving equipment is available when something goes wrong," said Frank Jennings Jr., recreational boating and water safety program manager for the 9th Coast Guard District. "Coast Guard boarding officers are not in the business of ruining a boater's day on the water. They're working to prevent boating accidents by making sure federally required equipment is on board and boaters are operating sober." The Coast Guard wants boaters to return home safely. With unseasonably warm air temperatures in the forecast, all boaters should ensure that they have all the required safety equipment and that it is in working order before heading out onto the water. Free vessel safety checks, offered by the Coast Guard Auxiliary and U.S. Power Squadrons, are performed at the vessel, and take about 15-30 minutes to complete, depending on the size of the vessel. Depending on availability of inspectors, VSCs can be conducted anywhere — from the marina to the boat owner's driveway. read more ... > Closure of Travel Centres
THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO --- April 6, 2012 --- Ron Nelson, as President of the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association, I wrote on behalf of our 37 member communities to express our extreme frustration regarding the announcement in Budget 2012 of the closure of the Kenora, Rainy River and Fort Frances Travel Centres. While we understand and support the need for deficit reduction, we question the rationale for closing every gateway centre in the western area of Northwestern Ontario. This decision will leave a busy tourist area completely void of the visitor information centres that are vital to providing visitors with the information they need to extend their stay and increase their spending – both of which are essential principles outlined within the Discovering Ontario report. It is interesting to note that the Fort Frances border crossing recorded a 10.8% increase in people crossing into Ontario this February. This decision comes on the heels of an earlier decision to reduce the funding to Municipally operated tourist information centres across the North. That resulted in fewer centres being available to assist the travelling public in learning what to see and where to go as they travel through this vast and magnificent land. read more ......>

DNR releases proposal for wolf harvest season this fall
MINNESOTA - January 26, 2012 - The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is proposing an inaugural gray wolf hunting and trapping season this fall that calls for a conservative harvest quota of 400 animals. Wolf research indicates Minnesota's wolf population could sustain a higher quota, but DNR officials say they are taking a measured approach to the state's first season. The proposal sets a quota of 6,000 licenses that will be allocated through a lottery system. Only one license will be allowed per hunter or trapper. Hunting would be allowed with firearms, archery equipment and muzzleloaders. Calls and bait would be allowed with restrictions. read more...>

Changes to Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Lottery
Duluth, MN Jim Sanders, Forest Supervisor for the Superior National Forest has decided to implement changes to the lottery and reservation system for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).
For 2012, the lottery will be retained for Fall Lake entry points D and 24 and Moose Lake entry points F, G and 25. The lottery applications for these five entry points can be made from December 19, 2011 to January 19, 2012. The lottery will be run on January 20th. Reservations for remaining permits for these five entry points along all other BWCAW entry points can be made on a first-come, first-served basis starting January 25th at 9:00 am central time.
The Forest Service is making this change based on several months of evaluation. Forest managers originally planned to eliminate the lottery entirely in 2012 and only run the first-come, first-served system for reserving wilderness permits for all entry points. However, based on comments received and the results of a test of the first come, first served process, Forest Supervisor Sanders has decided to retain the lottery for five entry points where most or all of the permits have historically been reserved during the lottery. For all other entry points, historic data shows there are permits available both after the lottery and throughout the season. Therefore, it is not necessary to run a lottery for all other BWCAW entry points read more......> NOSTA ELECTS GREENSTONE EDO AS PRESIDENT

Where an animal is in need of help, it requires specialized care to recover and return to the wild. You cannot keep wildlife in captivity without approval from the Ministry of Natural Resources. Determining if Wildlife is Orphaned
Some species leave their offspring alone temporarily, especially during the day. For example, deer spend much of the day away from their well-camouflaged offspring to minimize the chance of predators finding them. To determine if young wildlife is truly orphaned, check the animal periodically for 24 to 48 hours to see if it is still around. Keep your distance. Keep cats and dogs away from the area inhabited by the young animal; the adult will not return if it is noisy or if predators or people are close by. read more....> Lake Superior Day third Sunday in July all around the lake in both American and Canada Ashland, Wisc.— May 27, 2011 ---- The Lake Superior Binational Forum invites the public to celebrate the 8th annual Lake Superior Day celebrations by holding an activity or event on Sunday, July 17, 2011. Treydon’s family knew they would be moving, and the kids wanted to be part of Nipigon’s story before leaving. A stormy day in Pukaskwa National Park
Earlier this month, a kayaker in Pukaskwa National Park found himself stranded at the mouth of the Willow River in a storm. He saw Treydon’s Paddler bobbing by the shore and went closer for a look. Somehow, Paddle had managed to travel more than 180km from Nipigon Bay to Pukaskwa. Being hard of hearing means I miss most of the songbirds in the park, but the ponderous thud of the palliated woodpecker could not be missed. With the aid of my nephew who sees much better than I do we quickly located the woodpecker feasting on the grubs living inside the trunk of a long dead spruce tree. Judging from the many holes bored into this tree, I suspect that it has been feeding a generation or two of these woodpeckers. It is a revelation to see firsthand how an animal’s unique adoptions can allow it to thrive in our northern environment. read more......>

"In reacting to the shooting of several people by an apparently deranged individual, Mr. Ignatieff used the opportunity to tout the virtues of the gun registry in Canada, not only displaying appalling judgement, but a continuing and deliberate failure to recognize the difference between licensing and registration," said O.F.A.H. Manager of Government Affairs and Policy, Greg Farrant. "Clearly people who have mental health issues should not have access to firearms, which is what the licensing of firearms owners is all about. The licensing system in Canada involves courses, testing, screening and background checks by law enforcement before a license is issued. People who should not have firearms are routinely refused a license once the mandatory checks have been completed. Licensing focuses on the individual, and determines whether or not an individual can own a firearm. It is completely separate from the gun registry that the Liberal party continues to defend, which focuses on the firearm and does nothing to stop anyone from illegally obtaining a firearm and using it to commit a crime. read more.......> Forest Service to Hold Public Forums on Proposed National Forest Planning Rule DULUTH, MN - March 15, 2011 - The USDA Forest Service is offering a series of public forums around the country to explain the recently published proposed national forest planning rule and associated draft environmental impact statement.
