GREENSTONE, ON – February 3, 2010 - Bruce Hyer, MP for Thunder Bay – Superior North, announced the deadline for applications for Celebrate Canada grants is fast approaching on February 28, 2010, and encouraged municipalities, non-profits, First Nations organizations, cultural associations, and educational institutions, amongst others, to apply for funding before time runs out.

Hyer said “Each year, Canadians get together to celebrate our diverse multicultural mosaic, the rich cultural traditions of our First Nations, and our pride in being Canadian. Few peoples around the world can take such pride in living in an open society so enriched by diversity. Every year, it’s important that we step back to appreciate our country and how far we have come together. Grants to assist with costs of these festivities are being made available, but this years’ deadline is fast approaching.”

Municipalities, nonprofits, community groups and corporations are eligible to apply for Celebrate Canada grants by the end of the month for non-commercial projects. The grants provide financial support for activities organized during the Celebrate Canada period, from June 21st to July 1st. These activities celebrate National Aboriginal Day (June 21st), Canadian Multiculturalism Day (June 27th), and Canada Day (July 1st).

Hyer noted that “Communities across North of Superior are known for our vibrant local cultures and celebrations. I’m hoping that this year, more communities and groups will apply for funding than ever before. While we cherish our differences, we also gain strength from what we hold in common. These festivities will allow families to come together to appreciate our shared heritage. My office is available to assist any organizations that would like to apply.”
