Group of Seven recognized as Canadian icon

  THUNDER BAY, ON - June 25, 2008 - The final results won't be known until October, but the Dominion Institute closed off a survey of Canadians last week, asking all of us: "What 101 things best defines Canada?" The top 10 items on the list, a couple of days before it closed off, were: aboriginal Canadians, Canada eh, strong and free, the canoe, the Snowbirds, the Group of Seven, Canadian comedians, Anne of Green Gables, Stompin Tom Connors and CBC radio. I hope local tourism officials notice that the Group of Seven is on the list. Very few people outside the Sault know that this group painted its way to fame via boxcars up the ACR in 1918. One of those boxcars is rotting in a former mini-golf site in this city. Meanwhile one of the best-known Group of Seven collections hangs in the McMichael Gallery at Kleinburg, just northwest of Toronto. Thousands of Canadians have visited there and many think the Group began there. Both the Sault and the province of Ontario have been slow to promote this iconic group of painters that best portray this "naturally gifted" area. But CAPT (train people) have taken the lead by celebrating the Group's 90th anniversary. Lake Superior News read more...>

Ivanka – The Best of;

 THUNDER BAY, ON - July 14th, 2008 - It used to be next to impossible for a professional arts group to sell out a summer performance here in the city. Perhaps high fuel costs are keeping more people at home this summer, and they are discovering that there are lots of things to do in Thunder Bay.

I have seen several Ivanka shows, so I am not an Ivanka virgin as Jo-Ann Waytowich describes first time viewers of her productions.  As I was in 4th year music at the same time Jo-Ann Waytowich was penning her first “Musical”, “I can sing (can’t I)", I have been privileged to witness her career develop from that time. Diamond in the Rough

THUNDER BAY, ON - MAY 22, 2008 - When it comes to music the term Diamond in the Rough usually means a lot of talent just waiting for the big break. A number one hit, or at least some fairly frequent airtime over the local radio stations.  Kevin commented, ”One of the best musicians he has ever heard spent all his time and talent playing and recording in his basement”. Music wise he was great, but there was no career. Lake Superior News read more...>

Ojibwe Landscapes; A World Premier

THUNDER BAY, ON - MAY 13, 2008 - On Sunday evening, Dulcisono Women’s Choir presented their 2nd Mother’s Day Concert. The program was full of fresh music, all but two pieces composed or arranged since the year 2000. The Centerpiece of the concert was Brian Hubelit’s “Ojibwe Landscapes”, which had its premier performance. I called this fresh music instead of new music, since all of the pieces are programmable from an audience perspective. The director and her choir were very good at connecting the audience with the composer’s intent. The choir sang well, with joy energy and enthusiasm. Like a fine bottle of wine, this group keeps getting better year after year. Lake Superior News read more....>

The romantic frustrations on the forgotten woman came across clearly even with the amplification! Lake Superior News read more....>

The TBSO Season Finale

THUNDER BAY, ON, -  May 2, 2008 - The orchestra season is now over for the year. The Love List – Magnus Theatre

THUNDER BAY, ON. - April 6, 2008 - It was a sold out house for the gala opening of “The Love List” at Magnus Theatre. The show is a sexy and sophisticated comedy by a writer with a Thunder Bay connection, Norm Foster. Norm Foster studied radio and television arts here in the city back in the days when Confederation College was one of the few colleges to offer such a program. A 25-year career in broadcasting followed. Writing stage plays and theatre is something that came late in life, but when it did he turned out to be a prolific writer for the stage.Lake Superior News read more....>
