Speaking in the House, Hyer said “It was a privilege to submit a Motion on returning passenger rail service to Thunder Bay and the scenic North Shore of Lake Superior. This line was cut by the Conservative government of the late 1980’s, despite being VIA’s busiest route. Today, rail has been experiencing a renaissance because it is both environmentally friendly and efficient. This is one small step towards getting Canada back on track with passenger rail.”

This is a facility that will pay for itself many times over in the coming years. The cost of shipping personnel out of town for specialized training is only part of the savings. The skills our firemen learn at this centre will save lives as well. Fire Chief John Hays was quick to point out that this is only the beginning for the training facility. There are expressions of interest from Con College who hope to make training at this centre part of the curriculum for certain college programs. In fact the contract has been made and they hope to begin this fall. Lakehead University has also expressed interests in a research facility on site presumably to test new materials and engineered products for fire worthiness.

Lake Superior News Feeds - OVER $2.85 MILLION IN FUNDS FOR RAINY RIVER PROJECT

THUNDER BAY, ON - June 12, 2009 - KENORA, ON - Residents of Rainy River, Fort Frances, Emo, La Vallee, Alberton, Morley and Dawson will benefit from federal and provincial infrastructure funding, announced today by Greg Rickford, MP Kenora and Michael Gravelle, Thunder Bay-Superior North MPP and Minister of Northern Development and Mines. Sometime during the late night hours of Saturday, May 16, 2009 vandals tore down five "Fibrelite" panels from the open air pavilion walls at Cascades Conservation Area on Balsam Street. The culprits then tossed the panels into a bonfire adjacent to the pavilion. The fire was intense enough to cause some heat damage to a portion of the pavilion roof. A metal garbage can was also destroyed. A number of empty beer bottles at the scene suggests several individuals participated in the criminal activity.

Lake Superior News Feeds - Organ Spring Tune Up

THUNDER BAY, ON ------ May 21, 2009 -------- Jim Doddington is hard at work deep inside the organ chambers of the Casavant Organ at St. Paul’s United Church. The organ at St. Paul’s is large by city standards, though it is rather modest when compared to instruments in larger cities. The Thunder Bay instrument has approximately 3,100 pipes, and to tune each one would take a master organ tuner at least 14 hours to do the task. Let me share the back story before we get to The Big Ask. At a leadership event last week, the final presenter summarized the key messages of The Five Temptations of a CEO by Patrick Lencioni. He noted that this fable is an easy read, but, as all things which seem simple at the outset, the complexity surfaces in the urge to reflect on personal experiences related to the content. Reflection is fundamental leadership tool which unfortunately, takes a back seat to the daily grind.

Lake Superior News Feeds - Use Caution On Crown Land Roads In The Northwest

THUNDER BAY, ON - May 19, 2008 - The Ministry of Natural Resources cautions travellers of the danger of potential washouts and flooded sections on Crown land roads in northwestern Ontario.

The Church is has two heritage instruments in the sanctuary, its 1963 Lawrence Phelps designed Casavant pipe organ, and a 1953 Centenary edition Steinway model M piano. The recital will get underway at 8:00 pm and will be over by 9:30 pm
Most people will recognize the composers for the piano part of the recital, Chopin. Mozart and Bach will be featured on the Steinway. But literature for the organ has always been more eclectic. There are two reasons for this, one is not everybody has an instrument at home to practice on so there are not as many organists to start with. The other reason is that the history of music for the organ is as old as the history for written music itself, meaning that old Latin Codexes move back in time to the early 1300’s. The oldest playable pipe organ is in Sion France built about 1410. This gives organists about 350 more years of literature for their instrument that pianists do not have.

Lake Superior News Feeds - ONTARIO GEOLOGICAL SURVEY STAFF HONOURED

THUNDER BAY, ON - May 8, 2009 - Two employees of the provincial government’s Ontario Geological Survey (OGS) have received awards recognizing their dedicated service.

We can easily ignore the obvious. That's a dangerous leadership trait.

The 10-year, $1.2 billion deal is the largest transit contract in the country’s history.
Baird said priorities identified by the City of Toronto to him did not include “recent submissions” such as the Toronto Transit Commission contract that “came out of the blue.” The Minister said that the government’s motive is short-term economic stimulus, and that they have talked to the Ontario government to see if they’d take that approach as well. “We want stimulus now, not in 10 years.” he reiterated.

Lake Superior News Feeds - The Tipping Point

WAWA, ON ---- May 5, 2009 ---- The decision of the Ontario Municipal Board on whether or not to license a pit/quarry on Michipicoten Bay might well be one of its most important decisions ever. Its decision is pivotal – perhaps the tipping point – for the future of Lake Superior. What will its future be? Industrialization? Or the preservation and protection of its uniqueness in the world, its economy invigorated by showcasing this uniqueness to the rest of the world via education and tourism? The OMB decision could be precedent-setting for the licensing of the 15 other trap rock sites on the north shore of Lake Superior. This one-of-a-kind lake in the world could well become a supply store for the rest of the continent. Is it good planning to allow the incomparable coast of the jewel of the “freshwater sea” that is Lake Superior to be irreparably marred by selling it (perhaps our soul) for gravel?

Lake Superior News Feeds - Running with a Dream

NIPIGON, ON ----- May 4, 2009 ------ We have something to celebrate in the North West. The development of children’s music in the city and along the North Shore has made a great leap forward in the past couple of years. The driving force behind this is the husband and wife team of Derek and Laurel Oger.
There is something about this organization that is different than the usual mom and pop music team. The Kuumba and Rafiki group of choirs is quickly turning into every thing that a children’s (and youth) choir could ever be. For one thing the organization has a board of directors, and this helps the group achieve some of its funding and allows the music director a little more time to do what she is supposed to do, direct music

Lake Superior News Feeds - CEP Pensioner Win over AbitibiBowater

THUNDER BAY, ON -------- May 4, 2009 ------- Communications, Energy and paperworkers union (CEP) at AbitibiBowater (TSX:ABH) have won court decision that Abitibi Bowater had no right to unilaterally rescind pension benefit improvements that had been negotiated in a collective agreement prior to the newsprint giant entering bankruptcy protection

It comes in response to an alarming number of near misses that occur when workers are set up in the street to maintain or repair hydro lines in the city.
“We mark the area we are working in with orange traffic cones and the required signage; it is pretty hard to miss our trucks when they are set up. Yet, we seem to average one near miss for every setup,” says Don Zimak, Supervisor of Services and Connections at Thunder Bay Hydro. “This area becomes our work place. The Battle of the Atlantic was fought at sea from 1939 to 1945. The goal was mastery of the North Atlantic. Allied naval and air forces were opposed to the German submarines, whose main targets were the convoys of merchant ships transporting the material and troops vital to safeguarding the freedom of the peoples of North America and Europe.

Lake Superior News Feeds - A Last Curtain Call TBSO

THUNDER BAY, ON ----- May 3, 2009 ------- Goeffrey Moull has been a dynamic part of Thunder Bay’s musical life since he assumed the role of Music Director and Conductor in the year 2000. It does not seem that long ago, but his tenure with the orchestra at nine years makes him the second longest serving conductor in the orchestra’s 48 year history. During his time with the orchestra he has accomplished much, in his own words, the TBSO approaches excellence and in this respect it remains one of North Western Ontario’s best kept secrets. The secret is getting out through repeated CBC broadcasts of our small but fully professional orchestra. Recognition at home has come in unexpected ways. “I have to be the only conductor in the country to make the cover of the phone book”, is one of his comments to the mostly full house on Thursday night.

Lake Superior News Feeds - WORLD’S FIRST ATTEMPT TO SOLO KAYAK AROUND ALL OF THE GREAT LAKES

THUNDER BAY, ON - May 1, 2009 - On Saturday, May 2, photographer, writer and kayaking guide Bryan Hansel from Grand Marais,, Minnesota, will paddle out of the Grand Marais harbour on a 5-month, 3,800-mile solo kayak circumnavigation of all the Great Lakes – the world’s first attempt to do it by kayak.
